KHANH HUYNH
PRINCIPAL REGISTERED MIGRATION AGENT
I came to Australia as a refugee when I was 4 years old, one of the early Vietnamese boat people. I became Vice School Captain, School Debating Captain, gained a scholarship for university, gained an internship with Andersen Consulting and Shell, joined Shell’s Graduate Program, and worked for Reuters London.
My first role within Shell was to manage the Australia wide visual identity project; 10 years later, my last project with Shell was working with 24 European countries to stop fraud. As a Business Analyst for Shell, I travelled around Asia and Europe, and lived in London for 6 years. I am a dual Australian and UK citizen; however, I very comfortably identify myself as a global citizen.
I backpacked my way from London through Europe, the Middle East, and Egypt. Borders were, for the most part, a routine disruption to my travels until the Middle East where my lack of understanding (both in regards to language and process) became terrifying. In Syria, my husband was pulled off the local long haul bus by soldiers carrying machine guns and taken away for 45 endless minutes. We had simply not filled out a necessary form nor paid the required fee. A simple misunderstanding that caused extreme, unnecessary stress.
My serendipitous career change to RMA sits deeply with me as the right career for me. I have been extremely fortunate in my life, and being able to assist others fulfils a need to share my good fortune in a field that I believe in. My experiences have led me to believe that there should be freedom of movement between borders, and being a RMA allows me to guide people safely through the Australian migration laws and processes to live, work, and travel where they want.
